Abstract
The research was carried out in masalani division, Ijara district which sough to investigate the obstacle underneath wildlife conservancy. The research goes further to investigate not only the conservancy challenges but its ability to boost quality education in the area. Ishaqbini wildlife conservancy harbors a variety of wildlife species especially the endangered ones like the hirola (beatragus hunteri), wild dog (lycaon pictus) and the African elephant (loxodonta Africana). This conservancy is located in ijara district ishaqbini a local name meaning the mosquito infested lake or reservoir is located in the vast north eastern province of Kenya. The district was formerly part of Garissa district. The conservancy covers an approximate area of 72sqkm. The conservancy is flanked to the west by lowest part of Kenya's longest river (Tana (and the only permanent river in the district. The river has rich riverine vegetation a long its bank and areas of alluvial deposits as a result of seasonal flooding. Across the river there is the Kenya wildlife administered Tana River Primate National Reserve. To the south, north and east are human settlements and rural shopping centers. The ishaqbini community wildlife conservancy is the idea of four local communities from four locations in ijara district of north eastern province of Kenya. The locations are kotile, korisa, Abalatiro and Hara respectively. The ideas were hatched as a blessing to enjoy its benefits. As the land which these wildlife occur is designated as a trust land i.e. held in trust under the control and authority of the local county council. Under this reasons the Kenya wildlife service (k.w.s) could not settle claims on human wildlife conflict further the recent k.w.s efforts to Vil translocate some of the wildlife has been cut short by the local community after filling an injunction against them in the high court. The community with the help of a local N.G.O won the case. Therefore a community driven initiative on wildlife conservation has been engaged where ishaqbini has been the case. Beside its formation, it suffered many problems and developments since its inception. In probability cause, ishaqbini has so many challenges which need to be aired and catered for both locally as well as internationally. In a nutshell, the conservancy would have been exuding confidence if it can squarely settle some of the following obstacles on its way: • Lack of sustainable funding • Lack of infrastructural development • Poaching • Gender parity • Poor pasture or grass species • Perennial weeds • Pest and diseases • Location boundary • Ethnicity roles • Poor remuneration and staff training • Lack of recreational facilities Among many other challenges, if these constraints are captured ishaqbini would be in a chance to promote quality education in this case the conservancy will be able to send scholars to overseas for studies. About this study it also views in the factors that hinder the conservancy to be a tourist destination site in future. The methodology applied was both qualitative and quantitative approach which greatly employed a descriptive style design. The findings presented on this publication vm establishes that the solutions incorporated here will be able to erase or get rid of this challenges seemingly being positive with a long term effect on both date and time. Lack of proper exposure and adequate excursion trip for the stakeholders and the adverse community members proves a societal failure to a greater extent. Despite this aspect of illiteracy in the community, there are some notes, indications of improvement in the conservancy. Sensitizing, the community on wildlife conservation measures is one of the recommendations cited by the researcher. The government must assume the crucial role of ensuring intensive civic education succeeds in the central business district in our current divisional set up.
