Abstract
The objective of this study was to assess the effect of performance appraisal systems on
the performance of teachers. In the review of related literature, all secondly sources
relevant lo the study were made of use. The study employed a descriptive design since it
was about explaining a scenario. Questionnaires formed the main instrument and/ or
tools for data collection. Data collected was edited, coded analyzed and interpreted
basing on the pre stated objectives. The study further revealed that the principals
appraise the Teachers according lo the students' performance in their respective
subjects. Therefore the researcher recommends !hat !he appraisal systems employed by
the principals should cover all aspects of leaching profession including the way !he
teachers carry out the weekly duties, training of students for extra - curricular activities,
environmental conservation and even participation in community - based activities
geared towards improvement of the education standards in the school. In short, the
principals and heads of Departments should observe teachers on an ongoing regular
basis um/ they should not try to limit all their evaluations to the formerly designed
evaluation period.
