Abstract
This study aimed at investigating the effect of stakeholder participation on project success of Telecom projects in Mogadishu, a case study of Hormuud telecom Fibre Optical project, Somalia. The study was guided by three objectives of: (i) To ascertain the effect of stakeholders participation in project identification on project success of Telecom projects in Mogadishu, a case of Hormuud telecom Fibre Optical project, Somalia, (ii) To examine the effect of stakeholders participation in project initiation on project success of Telecom projects in Mogadishu, a case of Hormuud telecom Fibre Optical project, Somalia, and (iii) To identify the effect of stakeholders participation in project monitoring and evaluation on project success of Telecom projects in Mogadishu, a case of Hormuud telecom Fibre Optical project, Somalia. A Correlational research design was used to determine whether and to what extent the relationship between two or more variables exists.The mixed-method approach (triangulation) i.e. qualitative and quantitative methods to data collection were used to supplement each other. The target population was 98 participants and these included project staff and project managers of Hormuud telecom Fibre Optical project and other community/ opinion leaders. The sample size of the study consisted of 79 of target population and was determined through purposive and random sampling methods using Sloven’s formula (1978). Both primary and secondary data collection methods were used to collect relevant data to the study. The study used Self-administered questionnaire was used to collect qualitative data from middle and junior project officers.A semi-structured interview guide was designed and administered to senior officers’ level to capture in-depth qualitative data, the interview guide was used inform of face-face interaction with the top management of the Hormuud telecom Fibre Optical project, Somalia. The study findings shows that majority of the respondents who strongly agreed that stakeholder participation in project identification enhances the identification of a project problem or opportunity and defining a solution. Thus implied that stakeholders’ involvement in project identification influenced the success of Harmed telecom Fibre Optical project, Somalia. Hence, development projects have been a means for the local representatives to build a future for themselves. In conclusion, the study concluded that community participation in project identification allows project team to create a business case to define the problem or opportunity in detail and identify a preferred solution for implementation, and that community development as a process begins with needs identification. When they do this together the community is able to share the vision and commit to seeing it become a reality. Hence, needs identification is important in developing the capacity of grassroots communities. The study however recommended that the project management should always consult with community representatives first during project identification. The study also recommends that the project management should embrace collaboration and stakeholder voices are a strategic move that can impact companies in the long term. Further, the study recommends that the project management should also provide stakeholders with the background information they require to participate in a meaningful way.
