Abstract
The study investigated the causes of poor performance of English language among secondary school students in both Kawowo and Kaserem Secondary Schools in the UCE examinations. The performance has been very poor for a long time. This culminated to complaints from the parents, students and other stakeholders. It was upon this background that this study made a critical analysis of the causes of poor performance of English language at UCE examinations in Kaserem and Kawowo Secondary Schools in Kaserem Sub County Kapchorwa District. The study involved data selection which was collected from different categories of people who included administrators, staff and non-staff and students. The researcher used both qualitative and quantitative methods in obtaining and analyzing data the research questions guided the study. The questions wanted to find out the causes of poor performances of English languages and what can be done to motivate students to learn English language and the learning strategies. In conclusion the research established that in adequate qualified English language teachers, lack of language laboratory for teaching English language. Dominance of mother tongue, negative attitudes of students toward English language, improper use’ of methods in teaching English language, inadequate instructional materials and facilities, motivational orientation and interpersonal relationships, emotional problems, self-esteem are mainly the causes of poor performance of English language at Uganda certificate education
