Abstract
The study set out to investigate the effect of school environment on dropout rate of students in selected secondary schools of Transmara District, Kenya. The
specific objectives of the study were to investigate the level of class size and levels of student drop out and finally the relationship between school
environment and academic dropout of students in Transmara District. The study
used a descriptive correlative survey research design. The methods of data
collection was questionnaires. The findings revealed that school envirDnment
affects the dropout of students. Class size also has a significant effect on dropout
of students.. The study recommended that School facilities should be provided in
schools so that children understand what they are taught. More teachers should
be trained to cater for the growing number of students due to free secondary
education scheme. The school environment should be made conducive for the
students for example a~ clean environment should be emphasized and security
provided. Parents should be sensitized on the importance of participating in their
children’s education and school activities
