Abstract
Teenage pregnancy is defined as pregnancy in girls aged 10-19 years. It is estimated that about 11% of birth world-wide are to adolescents aged 15-19 years, and more than 90% of these births occur in low and middle-income countries (WHO, 2011). Teenage pregnancy is associated with many maternal and perinatal complications including perinatal deaths, prematurity and LBW, birth asphyxia and RDS, neonatal sepsis. The aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of teenage pregnancies and their adverse perinatal outcomes among teenage mothers in Kiryandongo general hospital between June 2018 and December 2018. The study was retrospective study in which postnatal mother record admitted and delivered at Kiryandongo general Hospital from June 2018 to December 2018 were analyzed. A Total of 2000 patients was found to have been admitted in the study period but 1800 files were reviewed because they had complete basic information and the other 200 files had incomplete information Data was collected using the data capture sheets which was the check list, and the data was analyzed using Microsoft excel and descriptive statistical tables and charts. Teenage pregnancy contributed to 12 % among mothers. The biggest percentage of teenage mothers had babies with perinatal complications and this was 75%. 60% had neonatal sepsis, 29% had birth asphyxia or RDS, 6.7% had perinatal deaths and 4.3 % had Premature and LBW. There is still high rate of teenage pregnancy, there is high rate of with perinatal complications among teenage mothers. The commonest perinatal complication is neonatal Sepsis. The incidence of perinatal mortality among teenage mothers was 6.7%
