Abstract
The research was about Drug Abuse and Morals of the Youths in Kansanga. The population size was 122 and the sample size was 84. Drug abuse is one of the major problems affecting the youths. This problem impacts negatively on the academics, social psychological and physical development among the abusers. This study was aimed at establishing the perception of drugs and how perception would influence youths’ behavior towards drug abuse.
The general objective of the study was to assess Drug Abuse and Morals of the Youths particularly in Kansanga slum area. And the specific objectives of the study are:- to determine how drugs affect youths’ education level, to establish the impact of drugs on the youths’ morals and to find the impact of drugs on the youths’ health.
Most of the youths that used drugs ended up droppings out of school and some stopped at lower levels of education. The highest percentage of drug addicts, 46(54.8%) came from those who didn’t attend school at all since that’s were peer groups occurred most. Most youth didn’t attend school and had nothing to do except hanging around groups. University level had the least percentage 7(8.3%) since youths there are more sensitized about drug abuse.
Conclusions. Youths’ who are drug abusers exists in Kansanga slum area and quite many young men are involved in drugs since they are the ones who are more influenced by peer groups. Many young men are led into taking drugs due to high exploitation by the society and band wagon groups. Most notable of these are unemployment, low levels of Education and lack of parental guidance from their parents and their dependents. Awareness of the effects of drug abuse among the youths’ is limited which make them to act more on drugs.
Recommendations. Government, policy makers and program providers should recognize drug abuse among the youths and come up with ways and policies to reduce drug abuse. In this case measure for drug abuse need to be looked upon.
