Abstract
The purpose of this study is to find out and establish the communication methods used in teaching children with hearing impairment in Migori District. This will be descriptive survey study. There are many children with different disabilities in Migori District. This is evidenced by a number of special units which has been opened within regular school to cater for these children with disabilities. A sample of nine teachers in the schools and units where children learn will be drawn from twenty with special units for the hearing impaired. The researcher will use questionnaires as research tools. The questionnaires will target teacher’s parents and learners with normal hearing who learn in regular schools. The questionnaires will be written by the researcher and presented in one school before they are used for data collection. The quantitative data will be analyzed in descriptive term while qualitative data collected will be analyzed using table, bar graph and percentages. It has been established that teachers use body language, gesture, speech in teaching these learners. The signs used are more traditional than Educational. The study has found out that there are more boys than girls with hearing impairment who have gone to school, Parents, teachers and other people also face communication difficulties with these children because they do not know signs. The teaching/learning materials used for teaching these children are also few. Because of the above problems, the government has decided to train teachers in special needs education through Distance learning and residential at Kenya institute of special Education (KISE) and Kenyatta University (KU) to improve communication methods. Lastly there is also need to create awareness to the parents and the members of the community on the appropriate Methods of communication. The researcher will also give a recommendation for further research
