Abstract
The study investigated the relationship between teacher characteristics and schools effectiveness with respect to pupils academic performance in selected primary schools in mandera west district, Kenya.The study objective include; to determine the teacher characteristics in terms of age, qualification, gender and experience, level of school effectiveness and level of pupils academic performance. The study employed across-sectoral correlation research design using mainly aqualititative approach on sample of 376 subjects selected from ten primary schools in mandera west Kenya. The population in the study included 10 head- teachers and 44 teachers from ten selected school bringing the total number of teachers to 54 and 322 pupils which brings the total number of the respondents to 376.Data was collected using questionnaire scored on five point likert scale. Data collection was processed using SPSS and was analyzed using frequency percentages graphs, correlation analyses. The study found that teacher characteristic and school effectiveness and pupil’s academic performance had a significant relationship with pupil’s academic performance. The study concluded that teacher characteristics, school effectiveness and academic performance are prerequisites for pupil’s performance. The study recommended that to achieve good pupils academic performance in primary education government of Kenya, school administrations, teachers and stakeholders should ensure that there are proper teaching staffs in all primary schools in mandera west district to improve academic performance.
