Parents’ socio-economic status and students’ dropout in selected public and private secondary schools in Busia district, Uganda

Abstract
This study sought to answer research questions which were; what are the demographic characteristics of the respondents in terms of age, educational qualifications, income, employment and marital status? , what is the level of school dropout in selected secondary schools in Busia District-Uganda?, What is the socio- economic status of parents in the selected secondary schools?, and is there a relationship between parents socio-economic status and students drop out. The sample size of the population included 190 parents of s.4 students in the selected schools who enrolled there right from senior one. The design of the study was a descriptive survey in particular descriptive correlation. Data were collected by means of a questionnaire. Data were analyzed using statistical package for scientific scientists SPSS). They were interpreted and analyzed using descriptive statistics of frequency, percentages, means, r values and tabular presentations. The study indicated that the males dominated the females 75 percent and 25 percent respectively. The results showed that the relationship of parents’ socio-economic status and students’ drop out in Busia District-Uganda is big. These findings further showed that the parents socio-economic status and students dropout are not significantly correlated Recommendations based on the findings were addressed to teachers, educational administrators, Ministry of Education and Sports officials, planners and researchers.
