Abstract
The study sought to examine television influence in the rights of people with albinism in Uganda a case study of NTV Uganda. It was guided by the following objectives, to examine the effect of media reporting and investigation in the promotion of rights of albinos, to assess the influence of media edutainment in the promotion of rights of albinos and to examine the impact of media sensitization in the promotion of rights of albinos. The study used a cross sectional research design with both qualitative and quantitative methods. The research population comprises of the people with albinism, community members. The study concluded that television influences demonstrates the diversity of strategies used at all levels of society with the aim of protecting rights of Ugandans with albinism and dealing with violence and discrimination affecting them. Human dignity and rights is evident in many of the media stories. The way in which people with albinism are described as brothers and sisters, as part of a ‘we’, positions them as included in the ‘family of Ugandan society’. The study recommended that Human rights practitioners, such as social workers, have a role in being vocal witnesses for social change and prevention of harm. Ensure that all teachers in the public education system are trained to adequately provide for the specific needs of children with albinism. Ensure that resources are at the disposal of schools to meet the specifications needed of children with albinism, notably by providing for textbooks and exams with larger fonts and assistive devices to read the blackboard. Pursue efforts to promote the safety of people with albinism by investigating threats and crimes against people with albinism and holding those responsible to account.
