Abstract
The study dwelled into the how English proficiency affects academic performance of pupils in K.C.P.E of Tuluongi Primary school in Baringo District, Kenya. The study aimed at determining whether English proficiency affected academic performance of pupils and the factors that affect the academic performance pupils in .K.C.P.E. The study was under lied by hypotheses; Ho: There is no significant relationship between English Proficiency and academic performance of students, Ho: There is no significant relationship between English proficiency and academic performance in Maths, Ho: There is no significant relationship between English proficiency and academic performance in social studies, Ho: There is no significant relationship between English proficiency and academic performance in science. Pearson’s Linear Correlation coefficient was utilized to test the hypotheses which were done at a significant level of 0.05. There was a significant relationship between English proficiency and academic performance of pupils. There was a very strong correlation between English and Maths. The researcher concluded that English proficiency was a determining factor in the performance of students however; there were other factors that are responsible for academic performance.
