School library and academic performance of secondary school students in Bushenyi - Ishaka municipality Uganda

Abstract
This study examined the role of school library on academic performance of secondary school student in Bushenyi Ishaka Municipality in Western Uganda. The study objectives were to determine the influence of library scholastic materials, establish the effect of school library environment and role of library staff on the academic performance of secondary school students in Bushenyi Ishaka Municipality. The research design employed survey with qualitative and quantitative approaches to collect and analyze the data. Questionnaires and interview guides were the instruments used to collect data from the respondents. Data were coded, analyzed and presented with Micro Soft word, Excel and SPSS. The findings were analyzed by use of frequency tables and percentages of the study variables. The findings of the study indicated that secondary schools in Bushenyi-Ishaka Municipality lack scholastic materials such as textbooks, internets and journals in the school libraries. The findings of the study also indicated that students did not use school libraries due to poor school library environment such as space, atmosphere, ventilation, lighting and color. The findings revealed that the service delivery by the school libraries staff was not satisfacto11y because they are not qualified. It was concluded that the effects of lack of scholastic materials, poor school library environment and unqualified library staff on academic performance is manifested on students' unimpressive academic perfo1mance of secondary schools in Bushenyi-Ishaka Municipality.
