Abstract
The study examined the petroleum laws in ensuring the protection of the environment in Uganda.
The knowledge of the utility of Crude oil in the world came into existence many centuries ago,
in the building Babylonian walls and towers, and even during the Roman Empire in the Dacia
province now in Romania there was the use of petroleum. However, the first ever known oil well
drilled was in China in the 34 7 AD using perforated pieces of drill attached to bamboo to extract
oil for combustion to evaporate brine to produce salt. The study was guided by the following
objectives;-to examine the international legal frame work in ensuring a clean and safe
environment, to examine the national legal for the protection of the environment in Uganda, to
examine institutional legal frame on the right to a clean and safe environment in Uganda and to
suggest possible recommendations in the promotion of free and fair elections in Uganda. The
researcher adopted doctrinal legal research. This means that research was conducted using
library materials which included both primary and secondary sources. The discovery of oil in
Uganda is a blessing and will generate a lot of revenue for the country which will eventually
bring about infrastructural development, improvement in the education sector, health and the
living standards of Uganda. Environmental training and awareness: There is need for
environmental training and awareness so that potentially affected people can know their rights,
the relevant legislative requirements, detailed procedures and work instructions for key activities
and tasks, risks and emergency plans and the means of responding to incidents.
