Abstract
This study investigated The Role of Radio in Rural Community Development. Professionalism and ways of life exemplified accessibility/coverage of radio while empowerment and encouragement to be self reliant characterized Community Development. The study particularly sought to establish and recommend the role radio should play in communities given that it's the only medium that extends to the hinterlands, cheap to buy and maintain. This in view of the fact that the media, while expected to inform and educate the masses by giving them information that can better their lives, have diluted the need to address issues that directly affect the people and resorted to airing westernized programmes that best encourage people to ape and adopt foreign lifestyles which have little or no importance in their lives. The study was conducted through use of both qualitative and quantitative analysis of data collection; data was collected in June 2008, using questionnaires, face to face interviews ,documentary review and content analysis from 25 respondents purposively selected from Machakos district ,analysed manually and presented in tables. Study established that radio was a prime mover in society, media practitioners lack proficiency in addressing issues, more efforts need be geared towards encouraging participatory communication and that culture, can be hindrance to development. The study concludes that radio is an important tool for transformation. It recommends that media employers direct more efforts to constant staff training to enable them adequately tackle the dynamics of the issues they address, media practitioners to ensure that they thoroughly do their part while making programmes by conducting thorough audience and programme research before and after to establish impact these programmes have on audiences not forgetting the friend and foe in culture when programming
