Career guidance and students’ interest in schooling in selected private secondary schools in Kampala, Uganda

Abstract
The study was carried out to investigate the relationship between career guidance and students’ interest in schooling in selected private secondary school in Kampala, Uganda. This study was based on five objectives that were; 1) to determine the profile of the respondents in terms of school type, gender, age and class. 2) To determine the level of career guidance. 3) To determine the level of students’ interest in schooling. 4) To determine whether there is significant difference between school type and students’ interest in schooling. 5) To determine whether there is significant relationship between career guidance and students’ interest in schooling. The researchers formulated one hypothesis to guide the study. The researchers employed random sampling method to draw a sample of three hundred and eighty one students (381) in the ten selected private secondary schools whose population all together was eight thousand one hundred and thirty six students (8136). The researcher used the content validity index (CVI) that gave the coefficient of the both instruments as 1.0 and 0.67 respectively. The T-test and Pearson’s Linear Correlation Coefficient statistical analysis were used to analyze the data. The hypothesis was tested at 0.5 level of significance. The results showed that there was significant difference between school type and students’ interest in schooling; and there was a significant relationship between career guidance and students’ interest in schooling. Based on the findings it was recommended, among others, that career guidance should be maintained, number of boys needs to be increased, include interesting subjects and activities to the school program, and by creating good student-student relationship and good teacher-student relationship. This should be done not in only the secondary schools in the study but all secondary schools in Kampala, Uganda.
