Abstract
The purpose of this study was to determine factors that affect prevention of HIV/AIDS
among people with Disabilities in Nkondo Sub-County, Buyenda District. In fulfilling this
purpose, the study determined level of prevalence of HIV/AIDS among people with
disabilities in Nkondo Sub-County; determined the social factors that influence
prevention of HIV/AIDS among people with disabilities; economic factors that affect
prevention of HIV/AIDS among people with disabilities and lastly, some HIV/AIDS
prevention strategies employed at Nkondo Sub-County were established.
Descriptive correlative design was used in this study and sample size of 80 people of
different category was sampled through purposive sampling. Both primary and
secondary data formed basis of this study and questionnaires were used to collect data
from the field. Ethical and logistic considerations of research were also seriously
considered in this research. Both qualitative and quantitatively data analysis were
employed using frequencies and percentages.
Study findings reveal that the HIV AIDS prevalence among people with Disabilities in
Nkondo Sub-County was generally high; social factors were also found to be influential
on prevention of HIV/AIDS among PWDS; Economic factors was also found to be
affection prevention of HIV/AIDS among people with disabilities; and HIV/AIDS
preventive measures were also found to be low in the Sub-County.
The study therefore concluded that both economic and social factors are instrumental in
limiting prevention of HIV/AIDS among people with disabilities. However~ in order to
reduce the prevalence and new infections among PWDS, it was recommended that
different approaches should be involved and involvement of different stakeholders such
as the central government, local government, NGOS in the prevention of HIV/AIDS
program for PWDS is likely to help.
