Abstract
This study will focus on the influence of mother tongue on the writing skills of primary pupils in Iganga.
It seeks to identify errors pupils make in their written work and reasons behind the errors.
It aims at discovering how mother tongue of the people in the district has interfered with the written work of the pupils and also the methods of teaching suitable for the pupils when used by teachers.
The study will employ a few approaches of qualitative and quantitative research methods.
Data for the study will be collected from the teachers of English and pupils in selected schools using research instruments, questionnaire for teachers and designed composition writing tests for the pupils.
The objective of the study will be to identify the causes of errors in pupil writing skills and how teachers could assist pupils to overcome the errors. The data will be collected and analyzed
It is hoped that findings of this study will provide insight into specific causes of errors in pupil’s written work. The new understanding and findings will provide the teachers, ministry of education and policy makers with the solutions of improving writing skills of the pupils
