dc.description.abstractThe study was set to examine perceptions of academic staff about employment system and its impact on academic staff performance at Nkozi University. The objectives of the study were to: examine the recruitment processes and selection procedures of academic staff in Nkozi University, examine the induction programme in Nkozi University for academic staff, explore how facilitation at Nkozi influences academic staff performance and explore the appraisal system used at the university and how it impacts on staff performance. A case study and cross sectional survey designs were used in the study. A sample of 150 academic staff was randomly selected from three faculties of Education, Arts and Social Sciences and Special •Needs Education. The University Secretary was also interviewed. The data was collected through questionnaire for academic staff and interview guide for the University secretary. The data was analyzed by use of tables and percentages to answer key research questions. The major findings of the study were:- the University employs both internal and external modes of recruitment of academic staff, the University recruitment and selection procedure are guided by the standards set by the National Council for Higher Education, most of the academic staff felt that the recruitment process is not satisfactorily done, most academic staff felt that selection is not objectively done in the University, formal induction of academic staff is practically lacking in the University except in some few departments; most academic staff felt that facilitation given to them when working greatly determines their level of performance; most of the academic staff reported that appraisal is lacking in the University and this has affected the academic staff performance negatively and that academic staff performance is faced by many challenges. Conclusively, the researcher was convinced that the employment system used 'in Nkozi University has to a greater extent no positive influence on academic staff performance as confirmed by the findings in the report. To that effect, the researcher put forward recommendations namely; the University should encourage and promote equal opportunity to joining academic staff by advertising m the national and international media, the University management should consider establishing performance evaluation and appraisal system, a comprehensive induction policy for both old and new staff be developed to enhance performance, adequate provision of facilitation be offered to staff, lecture room policy be initiated to address overload and communication gap in the University.en_US
