Abstract
This was a study carried out in selected schools in Kween District to investigate factors influencing girl’s performance in science subjects. The study was guided by the following objectives: To analyze the performance of girls in UCE in the study district. To assess the availability of resources in enhancing effective learning of science subjects in the selected schools. To assess the suitability of teaching method employed by the science teacher in enhancing effective teaching of the subject. To assess the attitudes of science teachers towards girls in solving the persistent problem of poor performance of girls in science subjects at UCE and therefore enable women to gain entry into professions considered preserved for men. L5 Research questions How is the performance of girls in science subjects in kween district? Are there adequate resources suitable for teaching of sciences? Do teachers attitudes have any effect towards the performance of science subjects by girls. How does the teaching method employed by the teacher affect the performance of girls in science subjects? Conclusions were based on the findings of the study; a lot of information was revealed concerning factors influencing performance of girls in science. The predominant factors influencing poor performance of girls in science are lack of adequate resources, (laboratory and laboratory apparatus, library books and teachers. most do not use effective teaching methods and poor encouragement to take science serious from teachers. Some students are over burdened with domestic work that they lack enough time to concentrate on books. Some are experience domestic violence at home which does not allow their minds to concentrate at school. Recommendations were based on the findings; the following recommendations can be made in an attempt to improve the performance of girls in science. The ministry of education and sports should urgently recruit more science teachers and private schools employ more qualified teachers. Increased teachers’ number would mean small and sizeable classes which are easy to manage. This reduces teacher student’s ratio. In service teacher training should be provided to science teachers to allow them refine their skills in teaching/handling sciences and change attitude towards girl’s science. The community around the girl’s science should be involved in raising the funds to buy books, laboratory equipments, building of libraries and laboratories. More research should be done on other factors which could affect the performance of girls in science. Much as there is a policy that science subjects are compulsory at ordinary secondary level, there is need for the country to direct ICT development so that people can learn science online.
