Abstract
The purpose of the study was to examine the effect of Somali refugees on security in Garisa, Kenya. The researchers examine the following objectives: to examine whether there are effects of Somali refugees on national security in Garisa county Kenya to find out whether there are effects of Somali refugees on human security in Garisa county Kenya and to assess whether there is a relationship between Somali refugees and food security in Garisa county Kenya. This study used cross-sectional research design to assess the respondents’ views towards Assessment of the impact of Somali refugees on community security. The researcher selected randomly a targeting population of 55,000 residents who are adults and provided information for the study. However by use of Sloven’s formula a sample size of 397 respondents was achieved. Data was collected using questionnaires, interview guide and documentary review. Findings on effects of Somali refugees on national security revealed that overall mean that had a value of two point seventy five and standard deviation of zero point ninety one this implies that Somali refugees are likely to affects national security in Garisa county Kenya. The correlation finding showed that, the researcher rejects the null hypothesis and concludes that there is a statistically significant relationship between Somali refugees and national security in Garisa county Kenya. Hence, Somali refugees have positive effects of on national security in Garisa county Kenya. Major results on the effects of Somali refugees on the human security in Garisa county Kenya showed that the effects of Somali refugees on the human security in Garisa county Kenya had a mean rated to 2.898 and standard deviation of 0.724 estimated to 73.5%. Based on the relationship between Somali refugees and food security, the researcher found out that that the relationship between Somali refugees and the food security in Garisa county Kenya had a mean rated to 2.514 and standard deviation of 0842. From the study findings the researcher concluded that since the study results based on the effects of Somali refugees on national security revealed that there is a positive and weak relationship between Somali refugees and national security In Garisa county Kenya. The researcher realized that due very may suspicious on Somali refugees in insecurity in Kenya; all these weakened the contribution of Somali refugees towards desirable national security In Garisa county Kenya. Based on these results, it was concluded that there is a statistically significant positive but weak relationship between Somalia refugees and national security In Garisa county Kenya. From the study findings and conclusions made the researcher recommended that to enhance this relationship, management of refugees In Garisa county Kenya needs to embrace a comprehensive refugees legal framework process that assesses and identifies risks in terms of occurrence likelihood, impact and how the risks would influence achievement of the Kenyan government objectives to curd any threat that may result from refugees originated from Somalia. More so there is a need for the UNHCR to expand its activities to cover not only the legal protection of refugees but also the protection of the physical security of refugees in prolonged refugee situations.
