dc.description.abstract | The research was carried out on the contributions of UPE policy to the socio-economic development of people. It was carried out in Dwaniro sub county Rakai district, it was intended to find out how UPE policy was contributing to development of communities, the challenges of the policy and what can be done to improve on the performance of UPE policy in Rakai district. The study used a descriptive research design and targeted local people, education administrators and the school going children. Data was collected using questionnaires and interview guides and this data was analyzed using thematic analysis in line with the objectives of the study. The study established that UPE policy had resulted into reduced illiteracy, created employment, construction of infrastructures and population control. The policy faced many challenges that included lack of commitment of policy implementers, lack of enough resources and poor performance of children as well as high school drop out rates. These were being improved through proper funding, training teachers and sensitizing the communities on the need for keeping children in schools. Therefore, communities as well as other stake holders in development should be supportive to the development of the education sector starting at the primary level so that education can promote peoples development through knowledge and skill development. | en_US |
