The research on the Impact of Poverty on Academic Performance was done in Gamba one of the three counties of Mpigi District. The main issue was to find out what poverty is, the problems brought about by poverty in the field of education, to find out how home related poverty affects academic achievement of students in secondary schools, whether there are other factors other than poverty that affect academic performance followed by suggestions that could be put in place to correct the situation by both parents, guardians and the government. Such a research was needed due to the fact that many students in upcountry schools have dropped out, absented themselves from school and those who have remained have not performed well especially in the national exams. Orie wonders whether this is due to poverty or other factors. The participants in the research were advanced level students from low grade secondary schools of Gomba County who were administered questionnaires to and data was analyzed using percentages, descriptive statistics and bar graphs. The main findings were that poverty really existed in Mpigi district and most of the students categorized to be coming from poverty stricken homes did not score beyond 4th grade in their UCE exams. Therefore there is a need for the Poverty Eradication Plan to speed up its work in order to enrich the academic progress of students especially those in rural areas. This can best be done by modernization of rural agriculture so that the rural farmers can be more productive through NARO and NAADS programmes
