Abstract
This study sought to find determinants in the performance of Biology amongst secondary school students of Kimilili Division of Bungoma North District, Kenya. Despite the fact that Biology is so important, students still perform poorly. The purpose of the study was to investigate the factors which lead to poor performance of Biology. The broad objective was to determine the factors leading to the poor performance of Biology amongst secondary school students of Kimilili Division of Bungoma North District, Kenya. The study was conducted using questionnaires to collect data. The questionnaires were administered on a selected random sample of respondents. Data was collected from 104 respondents (80 students, 16 teachers of Biology and 8 parents). The data was analyzed using quantitative method and presented in the form of tables, pie-charts, percentages and bar graphs. The study found out that there are many factors affecting the performance of Biology in secondary schools. They include teaching methodology in Biology, availability of physical facilities, revision of examination and test, motivation of teachers and students and students' aspirations among others. The study recommends that the District addresses each of those factors so that the performance does not deteriorate but improves.
