Abstract
This study sought to find determinants in the performance of Biology amongst secondary
school students of Kimilili Division of Bungoma North District, Kenya. Despite the fact
that Biology is so important, students still perform poorly. The purpose of the study was
to investigate the factors which lead to poor performance of Biology.
The broad objective was to determine the factors leading to the poor performance of
Biology amongst secondary school students of Kimilili Division of Bungoma North
District, Kenya.
The study was conducted using questionnaires to collect data. The questionnaires were
administered on a selected random sample of respondents. Data was collected from 104
respondents (80 students, 16 teachers of Biology and 8 parents). The data was analyzed
using quantitative method and presented in the form of tables, pie-charts, percentages and
bar graphs.
The study found out that there are many factors affecting the performance of Biology in
secondary schools. They include teaching methodology in Biology, availability of
physical facilities, revision of examination and test, motivation of teachers and students
and students' aspirations among others.
The study recommends that the District addresses each of those factors so that the
