Financial rewards and employee performance in Health Services, Uganda

Abstract
This study established the relationship between financial rewards and employee performance in the health services sector. It was guided by four specific objectives that were set to determine the respondents profile in terms of gender, age, level of education, position and experience, the level of financial rewards and the level of employees' performance in the health services sector and to establish if there is a significant relationship between financial rewards and employees' performance in the health services sector of Uganda. Data analysis that was done using descriptive statistics found out that majority of the respondents were female, and they were youth in the age brackets of 24- 29 years of age, certificate holders dominated the study and most of the respondents were nurse (health personnel) with experience falling the brackets of 2 -4 years. The analysis went ahead to reveal that the level of both financial rewards and employee performance in the health services sector of Uganda stood at moderate level. Pearson's Linear Correlation Coefficient found that financial rewards are positively correlated with employee performance. Regression analysis results also indicated that financial reward is responsible for over 53% towards variation towards employee performance. Basing on the above findings, the researcher made the following recommendations; the government should make the reward system very transparent and known to all the relevant stakeholder; experience should be considered in regard to when rewarding employee and this will serve as the major motivator to experienced staff; employers before recruitment and selection process must be certain with salaries and other payments/ benefits including accommodation and means of transport of their employees; to get the best employees, employers should come up with fair and attractive pay scale to avoid inequalities in the scale so as to entice candidates to join their companies and institutions and subsequently improve employee performance; employees need to be more creative and innovative because that is when they will command high salaries both financial and non financial because they will be identified in the public as exceptional employees with ability work related solve problems.
