Abstract
The study on the adult education on the Socio-cultural Development of Women” was carried out
in Kira sub county, Wakiso district in Uganda with a view to explore the contribution of adult
education to the socio-cultural status of women, problems experienced in adult education and the
possible solutions the problems experienced. A descriptive survey design was used using
interview guide administered to a sample of 90 respondents who were purposively selected.
It was established that, adult education has made women closer to their children, it has reduced
the level of women;s dependency on men, and has provided literacy skills as well as the income
generating opportunities. The programme however encounters a number of problems such as
some women having a negative attitude towards it, insufficient time and resources in the
monitoring and evaluation process. However, solutions such as sensitizing women on the
benefits of adult education, and involving other stakeholders such as religious leaders, civic
leaders, were suggested to solve the problems.
