Abstract
The study was hinged on the investigation of the relationship between teacher-student ratio and job performance in government universal secondary education schools in Bukedea Town Council, Bukedea District, Uganda. This study employed a descriptive correlation research design with the population of 3200 students, 75 teachers, 3 headteachers and 1 inspector of schools. The researcher used non-probability and probability sampling procedures. The non- probability sampling procedure used in this study was purposive sampling for inspector of schools, headteachers and teachers. While probability sampling, simple random sampling was used for choosing students. The total population of the teachers, headteachers, inspector of schools and students was 3279 and the final sample size was 435 respondents. The researcher used quantitative and qualitative approaches with the structured questionnaire and interviews. Through interviews it was found that in government universal secondary education schools in Bukedea Town Council, Bukedea District the teacher-student ratio in most of the USE schools was at the average of 1: 100 students. Majority of the respondents agreed that the current teacher-student ratio in government universal secondary education in Bukedea Town Council, Bukedea District affects the teachers job performance in terms of scholastic materials, classroom size and teacher- student interaction. the study recommendation based on the findings of this study suggested that the government should Increase on the number of teaching staff to reduce the teacher/student ratio to the mandatory 1:40 ratio and also the government should increase the number of scholastic resources like classrooms, desks, laboratories, libraries among others so as to create a conducive learning environment in government universal secondary schools in Bukedea town council Bukedea district.
