Abstract
The study was to assess the student-Teacher Ratio (STR) on academic performance of students
in selected secondary schools in Iganga district, The objectives of this study were; to identify
student enrolment and number of teachers for calculating student teacher ratio and class sizes ; to
identify the relationship between the student-teacher ratio and academic- performance ; to
identify the major challenges facing the selected public secondary schools in Iganga district.
The study targeted 30 public secondary schools in the Division in which a total of 24 schools
were sampled for the study. A cross sectional research design was used as the research design for
the study. Questionnaires were used in collecting data for the study. The questionnaires were
administered to all the headteachers and teachers of the sampled schools piloting of the research
instrument was conducted prior to the actual data collection to determine the validity and
reliability of the tools.
The relationship between STR and academic performance was worked out using Pearson’s
product moment correction coefficient R, the value of R calculated was -0.323.
This negative correlation between the STR and academic performance indicated that as STR
increases performance decreases and \1ice Versa.
The findings of the study revealed that STR significantly influence performance of students in
National Examinations. The study recommended to all Education sector stakeholder to pay
adequate attention to STR since it affects performance of students in secondary schools. It
recommended the government to employ more teachers to lower STR and ease teacher workload.
