| dc.description.abstract | The economic sector reforms instituted by the Kenyan government in the year 2000 led to the liberalization of the economy. This created more opportunities for women entrepreneurs to venture in to business. A survey was conducted to find dot how the women entrepreneurs have been performing and why there's a high rate of failure amongst women entrepreneurs in Kenya. The study covered a period of five years between 2000 to 2010 using businesses in Machakos town as a case study. Data was collected from one hundred entrepreneurs. This was done through semi structured interviews and use of questionnaires. Data was analyzed using descriptive techniques using tables and charts and percentages. The study revealed that many women entrepreneurs faced cultural challenges while trying to venture in to the entrepreneurial world. This meant that those entrepreneurs who successfully meander through these obstacles stood a greater chance of succeeding in their businesses in the long run.
