Abstract
The major purpose of this study was to investigate the challenges encountered by learners
with exceptional needs in the mainstream in Njoro Division. The other purpose was to
come up with the intervention measures required to alleviate the problems. To achieve
the above objectives, a thorough study was done in five schools in Kihingo Zone of Mola
District which acted as a representation of the whole Njoro Division. The report among
pupils, teacher-pupils and teacher-teacher was observed. The results revealed that there
was no Education officer and pupils interaction. Learners had limited educational
resources. Pupils have language banier leading to poor pupil-teacher interaction. Many
children in the mainstream schools suffer hidden health problems. Majority of the
teachers in the incll)sive settings are not trained to handle the diverse special needs ยท
displayed by the exceptional children. It was therefore recommended that the factors
contributing to learners with special needs in the regular school be dealt with by adhering
to the intervention measures suggested. This included acceptance of the children by the
immediate caregivers and education stake holders through provision of basic facilities
and training. The government should also develop education policies geared towards
meeting the needs of learners with special needs. Awareness campaigns should be
launched in all institutions and in the community for iri depth intervention.
