Abstract
The study was about an analysis of the effects of performance appraisal on
Employee performance, a case study of Bamburi Cement Limited, Head Office,
Mombasa Kenya. The specific objectives of the study were; to evaluate the
relationships between goals and employee performance, to examine the effects
of performance appraisal on employee performance and to assess the impact of
rewards on employee performance.
Performance appraisal is paramount to establish a high performance culture in
which individuals and teams take responsibility for the continuous
improvement of business processes and for their own skills coi tributilm
within a framework provided by effective leadership. Hence, Bamburi Cement
has been failing to retain its employees. There are unproductive behaviors such
as absenteeism, low production and lack of employee commitment. This is
evidenced by high labor turnover of staff for greener pastures. This might cu use
a reduction in organizational effectiveness and the organization may not be
able to stand competition from other organizations in the industry.
The study used a case study as a research design. In data collect.ion
the researcher employed a cross sectional survey through the admirnstraLioc. ur
questionnaires.
It was recommended that organization's strategic goals should
communicated and explained to all employees and linked to their individual
specific objectives and for goals to be 'SMART', they must be discussed,
understood and agreed. All employees must be appraised and rated accu1ding
to the existing policies. Participatory appraisals should be strongly encouraged
and appraisals should be conducted more frequently.
