Abstract
The study on “foreign consumer goods and local goods production” was carried out in Mukono district, Uganda. The purpose of the study was to investigate the effect of the influx of foreign consumer goods on production level of local goods in Mukono district, Uganda. The research objectives included: 1) determine the level of foreign consumer goods; 2)determining the levels of local goods production; 3) and determining the relationship between levels of foreign consumers goods and levels of local goods production in Mukono district, Uganda. The study involved 141 respondents of which 53.2% were males and 46~8% were females. The study used simple random sampling technique to select the local traders and consumers. Purposive sampling method was used to determine customs officials, and local producers. On the levels of foreign consumer goods in Mukono district, the study concluded that foreign consumer goods still dominate Mukono markets. On production level of local goods, the study concluded that local goods are still poorly produced, they are poorly perceived by the local customers as inferior goods, the goods are expensive and are poorly supplied in Mukono district. On the relationship between levels of foreign consumer goods and levels of local goods production in Mukono district, the study revealed that there is a positively significant relationship between levels of foreign consumer good and the levels of local goods production. The study further concluded that the government should avial financial services to SMEs, protect indigenous firms, waive taxes on local products, change public perception, and encourage merging of small scale firm. The research recommended that the government employ some laws to protect the local consumers and that there should be some restrictions on the importation of goods, among others.
