Abstract
Children play has for a long time remained less important in the eyes of many adults
who only see play as recreation and not very important activity in the development
of a child. Vygotsky, 1962 believed that play is an excellent setting for cognitive
development.
The main concern of the study was to determined impact of play way method on
academic performance in Kimulot Location.
The study was a descriptive survey conducted in King Jesus Junior School. The ECDE
centre had 150 children, 1 head teacher and 4 ECDE teachers were sampled by
lottery random sampling. The data was edited and analyzed using descriptive
statistical tools such as frequencies and percentages. The findings of this study
revealed that there is low use of play way method of teaching in ECDE centre due to
low availability of play materials. Most of the available materials in ECDE centre are
improvised by teachers. The use of play way method adds value to learning. Majority
of ECDE teachers are trained through DICECE system which is a government training
system under the Ministry of Education.
The study recommended that ECDE teachers to collect, develop and use variety of
play way materials like charts, models, cut outs, pictures and real objects in teaching
ECDE children.
