Abstract
The study was about social factors and female pupils, participation in mobile
school programme. In wajir bor division Wajir district Kenya.
It was guided by five objectives:- determining the profile of the respondent as
in gender, age, parents religion and income status, the extent to which social
factors such as home based factors, school based factors and individual based
factors affects girls participation in mobile school programme in Wajir bor
division Wajir district-Kenya ,to determine the degree of girls participation in
mobile school programme in wajir, to determine if there are significance
difference in the degree of participation in mobile school programme between
female and male pupils in Wajir bor division Wajir district, To determine the
relationship between the social factors and girls participation in mobile school
programme using descriptive, comparative and co-relational survey design.
The study employed a sample of 105 standard eight pupils of seven selected
schools in wajir bor division wajir district,
The findings from the frequencies and percentage distribution showed that
male pupils were 49 (64% dominated female pupils 28 (36%)
The extent to which home based factors affects girls participation in mobile
school programme differs with some factors affecting more than the others e.g
Concerning individual based factors, result indicated that only one factor (the
thinking that good clan should have only boys) contributed to high extent
(Mean 2.64% average mean for individual based factors.
The finding also revealed that several school based factors were found to
contribute to female participation to a high extent, e.g teacher favoratism for
girls (mean 2.82), having more male teachers than female teachers in the
school (mean 2.82), having desks for girls or boys only (mean 2.74) and
others.
Regarding degree of participation, that of games and sports was very high
(3.08) and asking teachers questions in class was high (mean 3:00) however
girls participation in pupils leadership was found low. (Mean 288)

No significance difference was found in the degree of participation between
male and female pupils except that of sports and games.
A positive but insignificant correlation was found between home based factors
and pupils participation in mobile school programme. (r=0,044 sig= 0.706)
while a positive and significant correlation was found between participation in
mobile school program and individual based factors (r= 0.200, sig = 0.050).
From the findings and conclusions reached in this study, the following
recommendations were derived following the study objectives and hypothesis
° There is need for the government of Kenya to implement poverty
reduction programme since it has a direct link with pupils participation in
school. (majority poor)
o In order to improve girls participation in mobile school programme the
following home based factors have to be worked upon e.g parents should
ensure that, they pay fees for girls first or both boys and girls.
o Home chores such as fetching water, looking after animals should not
consume girl’s time for study.
o Both parents and pupils should change their attitude towards education for
girls and having girls in school.
