An investigation of the impact of unplanned settlements on efficiency of environmental sanitation management in Mwanza city was conducted in 6 wards of Mwanza city council. The variables considered include; forms of poor environmental sanitation in unplanned settlements, its effects on the environment and human beings and solutions being put in place. In order to investigate the above variables, a general survey research design was used. Methods used in data collection included; oral interviews, questionnaires, observation, group discussions and taking photographs of the existing situation. The study revealed that the major forms of poor environmental sanitation problems inunplanned settlements of Mwanza city were; poor solid waste management (40%), poor liquid waste management (3 3%), poor and lack of access roads (16%) and poor housing (11%). However the dominant one being poor solid waste management; accounting for (40%) of the various forms of poor environmental sanitation problems. The study further revealed that poor environmental sanitation problems affect the health status of the people, water quality, biodiversity, scenic beauty and recreational activities. The study revealed that, what has been done to improve the unplanned settlements was; law enforcement and community involvement. So I recommended that the hereunder should be done for the situation to be improved; provision of access roads in unplanned settlements, construction of communal cesspool (cesspit) for waste water collection, storage and disposal and upgrading the squatter settlements by giving the title deeds to the squatter owner so as to stimulate the sense of ownership hence enable the construction of good and permanent structures.en_US
