dc.description.abstractThe research involved an evaluation of the effectiveness of organic farming in promoting sustainable agriculture in Kitumba-sub-county, kabale district south western Uganda. The main objectives of the study were to identify the principles and practices of organic farming, to identify the benefits of organic farming, to establish other methods of organic farming and finally to find out the factors that influence the adaptation of organic farming. The study was also carried out for a period of 3 month that is from March to June 2011. Organic farming was introduced with the aim of promoting sustainable agriculture by ensuring use of organic farm inputs in form of fertilizers, pesticides and conventional agriculture. In addition organic farming had the aim of protecting the environment from pollution. A total population of 80 was considered and a sample of 50 respondents was selected representing both organic farmers and non organic farmers. This sample was chose by use of a sample random sampling technique. The research design was based mainly on qualitative and quantitative design; the data was primary data and secondary data that were given by respondents and from text books, journals, newspapers and previous researchers. The data was collected by use of questionnaires and interviews. After collecting the data the researcher analyzed it manually by grouping into tallies and frequencies. In addition, the data was presented by use oftable percentages and frequencies. The researcher found out that, the major farming practice from crop rotation was the major farming method used to improve soil fertility and farm yard, manure, pests were mainly controlled through intercropping and use of pesticides, diseases were prevented by use of local herbs and herbicides. The major factors which influence organic farming in the area were land shortage and poverty, climate and landscape, organic farming consumes time when preparing and expensive.en_US
