Abstract
The purpose of this study was to establish· the effects of poverty on pupil's academic performance of the selected primary schools in Kendu-Bay sub division, Rachuonyo district, Kenya. The specific objectives of the study were to investigate the relationship between the effects mentioned and academic performance in Kendu-Bay sub division, and to investigate the role of the community in alleviating poverty and improving education in Kendu-Bay sub division. The study employed a descriptive research design and the instruments used for data collection were questionnaires to the staff members of the schools and pupils involved in the study and interview guides. The findings were presented and interpreted in relation to the study objectives and research questions. While linking to the existing literature, results included demographic characteristics, frequency and percentages. Based on the findings, it was observed that poverty affected the academic performance of pupils negatively. The findings suggested recommendations on areas pertaining to the provision of school facilities for pupils to learn well.
