Abstract
A study was carried out in Rwemirokora Village, Ishaka Municipality with the purpose of assessing the knowledge, attitude and practices of mothers towards the prevention of diarrhea among children under 5 years. A descriptive study design was employed and 40 respondents were selected using purposive sampling procedures. Data was collected using a questionnaire. Most respondents had knowledge about the prevention of diarrhea; 30 (75%) had ever heard about prevention of diarrhea among children of 3 months to 3 years.16 (40%) obtained information about prevention of diarrhea among children from health workers while most 20 (50%) reported use of ORS in management of diarrhea in children under 5years. Respondents had negative attitudes towards the prevention of diarrhea in children under 5 years as 25 (62.5%) respondents strongly disagreed that they thought of taking children to the hospital whenever they got diarrhea and that diarrhea among children under 5 years is preventable. Respondents had poor practices towards the prevention of diarrhea among children under 5 years as most 27 (67%) never ensured that adults washed children’s hands before eating food, did not employ good hygiene during food preparation and handling and lacked pit latrines and hand washing facilities., 28 (70%) never ensured that all fruits and vegetables given to children were washed and 24 (60%) did not store their water well covered. In conclusion, the study found out that the attitude and practices towards the prevention of diarrhea were majorly poor and this further called for improved and regular sensitization of caretakers on preventive measures of diarrhea among children under 5 years.
