Abstract
The study examined the “role of mass media in reducing HIV/AJDS among infants in Uganda”.
The study was carried out at UBC the national broadcaster. The study achieved the following
objectives; to examine the role of mass media in combating HIV/AIDS, causes of HIV/AIDS,
Effects of HIV/AIDS and measures to combat HIV/AIDS in Uganda. The researcher adopted the
case study research design and correlation study design which explored role of mass media in
combating HIV/AIDS in Uganda.
Data was collected from a sample of 30 respondents in using self administered questionnaires
and was later analyzed using Pearson correlation coefficient (r). The findings revealed the Mass
media had a positive and significantly related to combating HIV/AIDS (P0.000<0.0l, r=375)
the study concluded that majority of the respondents agreed that mass media had contributed
significantly on the combating of HJV/AIDS in Uganda.
Additionally the findings showed that mass media provides education, awareness on HIV/AIDS,
sensitization, disseminating information of HIV/A]DS, influencing public opinion of H1V,
creating a supportive and enabling enviromnent, providing a knowledge base for a HIV and
capacity building.
The findings show that causes of HIV/AIDS which include poverty, conflicts, corruption,
cultural erosion, illiteracy, unemployment and solutions to combat HIV/AIDS which include
gender mainstreaming, eradication of gender discrimination, provision of social services,
eradication of girl child labor and early marriages, women empowerment, eradication of
domestic violence and sexual abuses. In conclusion mass media has played an important part in
the fight against HIV/AIDS in Uganda.
