Abstract
The purpose of the study is to investigate the role of local government and poverty alleviation in Nabutiti, Makindye East division, Kampala district. The study was guided by the following objectives, to identify the role of local government in poverty alleviation to find out the effectiveness of the strategies used to reduce poverty in Makindye Diyision and to suggest policy recommendation based on research findings. The study will employee descriptive research design in its methodology and the study findings included that Local governments play an important role in providing better local public goods can to meet the demands of their populations, Local governments develop infrastructure such as roads, health centers, and urban services, Initiating integrated programs for the improvement of the urban environment, Supporting the development of small businesses and micro-enterprises, Fostering citizenship and social inclusion, Collaborating with foundations and philanthropic organizations on social projects, Alleviating the hardships endured by poor and marginalized populations and Initiating special programs to reach vulnerable groups, Local governments support both government and private poverty alleviation programs, Instituting participatory urban processes that give a voice in decision-making to poor and marginalized populations, Partnering with communities, community-based organizations. Further findings reveal that Policy initiatives to promote sustained economic growth include those that seek to create a conducive environment for private sector investment in all aspects of development, thus reducing the pressure on limited public sector (human and financial) resources; promote local enterprise and self employment, especially for women and other groups outside the formal sector; support infrastructure and social services development, as a source of increaSed job opportunities as well as the creation of a healthy, more productive workforce; remove market distortions such as credit subsidies and import! export restrictions; and encourage improved regional/sub regional economic cooperation. Environmental Management. Environmental considerations are key elements in sustainable economic growth. Pressures of population and poverty often compound the threat of deforestation and the exploitation of resources. Many rural poor live in ecologically fragile areas that require sensitive resource management in the face of increasing degradation. The study will finally recommend and Conduct research; determine the metrics to measure the organization’s performance. Compile a list of factors that are important in an organization, developing methods to organize and collect data and understand your strengths and weakness.
