The study examined the relationship between teacher characteristics and academic performance of secondary school students in Nandi North District, Kenya. The study used a descriptive survey design, which is concerned with describing the characteristics of a particular individual, or of a group. The population of the study comprised mathematic teachers in the district. The number of schools in the district currently stands at 40 with a mathematics teacher population of 44. A sample of 35 secondary schools was randomly selected to participate in the study, and from these schools 37 mathematics teachers were sampled to respond to a survey questionnaire that was constructed by the researcher and used to collect data for the study. The study also made use of document analysis to establish the performance of these schools in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education examination. The data obtained were analyzed with the help of SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) using both descriptive and inferential statistics. The null hypothesis generated for the study were tested at 0.05 level of significance using one-way Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). The findings (ANOVA results) revealed that the teachers characteristics were not significantly related to students’ academic performance with the exception of teacher’s age. Teachers’ sex, academic qualification and experience had no significant relationship with the students’ achievement in mathematics. There was a statistically significant relationship between teacher’s age and students’ achievement in mathematics. The study, therefore, recommends among other things that, the government and other stakeholders should consider further researching into student failure in mathematics.en_US
