Abstract
Motivation represents the outcomes of several behavioral inputs such as
attitude and learning, and it is an important concept receiving
considerable attention from academics, researchers and practicing
managers. This study was carried out to assess how motivated teachers
were to impart effectively knowledge and skills to learners in Kampala
district. The following objectives guided the study: to find out if the
teachers were getting basic needs from schools where they taught; to find
out if they felt any secure while teaching; to establish if at all schools
were providing the social needs to these teachers in order to perform
well, to establish if the schools had put in place job enrichment
strategies in order to build the esteem of leaders, and to find out if
schools as organization were in position to help teachers aspire and
grow academically. The respondents used in the study were forty
teachers who filled a semi-structured questionnaire containing items
which had been formulated from the objectives
Findings showed that schools had provided money incentives to the staff
members in form of salary payments, some few school provided more
incentives such as bonus, appreciation for a job enrichment done and
over time teaching. It was also established that teachers received food,
housing from the schools. Findings further highlighted that teacher's
safety and social needs as well as self actualization needs were well
catered for and teachers were therefore expected to be motivated to work.
It was ruled out that work conditions were responsible for the poor
performance of teachers in schools. It was recommended that teachers as
managers continue to provide conducive working conditions for their
staff members in order to make them even work harder.
