dc.description.abstractThe purpose of this study was to determine girl child education and its challenges in Kisumu District Nyahera sub-county, Kenya. Specific Objectives of the study were to assess the challenges in the promotion of the rights of the girl child to basic education, to describe effects of girl child school dropouts, to identify the ways of curbing girl child school dropouts. The methods used for data collection were questionnaires to pupils who were randomly selected and interviews with teachers. The findings revealed that children dropout of school because of poverty, school safety. Parental attitudes, early marriages lead to school dropout. The study recommended Compensatory educational services should be provided to help remedy early educational disadvantage. Economic poverty and rural location are relevant criteria for the allocation of compensatory services. These services should be concentrated at the preschool and lower primary school levels, in combination with adult - parent education. Funding of compensatory services should be over and above the equalization of basic educational services already recommended. Examinations at Standard III and Standard V should measure rudimentary literacy. All enrolled pupils should sit for these examinations. Priority and publicity should be given to the minimization of illiteracy rather than to the proportions of pupils with distinguished marks. Educational complexes of substantial size should be developed to service small towns and surrounding rural areas. Transportation services should be improved and absorbed as an educational cost to permit the numerous educational advantages accruing from consolidationen_US
