Abstract
Majority of patients seek treatment in other health units and hospitals while the
few patients who seek treatment at Lira referral hospital do so because of
insufficient fund. This causes concern to the public as one has in mind that
employees in Lira referral hospital have equivalent or even better qualifications
than those employees in other health units.
To ascertain the problem, the study employed the following objectives:- socio
economic status of employees in relation to the level of performance; salary
scale of employees and its relation to performance: management system in the
institution and performance of employees; and provision of working tools relation
to performance of employees at the institution.
The study employed a sample survey design and used questionnaire that can be
quantified on the sample selected from the departments.
From the programme in the computer frequency table, percentage table and Chi
square statistics were used to analyze the data collected from the study.
The study found out that socio economic status of employees enhances their
performance. The study also found out that high salary pay enhances
performance of employees. It was also found out that management system (lack
of personnel policies, lack of supervision and presence of harsh leaders) would
not affect performance of employees. Lastly provision of sufficient working tools
would improve performance of employees.
In conclusion; good socio economic status improves on employee performance.
Also good salary scale makes employees to perform better at their work places.

The author disagrees with employees by saying lack of policies, lack of
supervision and presence of harsh leaders would lower employees’ performance
at their work places. Lastly having sufficient tools makes employees to perform
better at work places
The author recommended that employees needed training and refresher courses
to up date them with knowledge to meet challenges concerning new technology.
The employee should have self appraisal and evaluation to enable them to learn
of errors and weakness they have. The employees should be accorded friendly
atmosphere in order to create unity and cooperation among the employees. The
employees should be provided with accommodation, given gifts (money,
certificates) to motivate them to work harder. Lastly the research is to be
extended to other public institutions to enable them acquire new knowledge to
get solution to the problems that affect employees.
