| dc.description.abstract | The present study aimed at establishing the relationship between community participation and sustainability of projects in Gasabo District, Kigali-Rwanda. The specific objectives of the study were to establish relationship between involvement and sustainability of projects, to establish relationship between empowerment and sustainability of projects, to establish relationship between capacity building and sustainability of projects. The total population for this study was 1 89 people and Data for the study was collected from 59 respondents including 56 community beneficiaries and local leaders and 3 project managers from the evident leading companies of transport including KBS, Royal Express and RFTC, this study employed both quantitative and qualitative paradigms. Specifically, it took a correlation, cross-sectional design, which correlated the variables under this study. Questionnaires were analyzed in Excel and SPSS programs by using charts and tables of frequencies and percentages. The Pearson correlations proved that there is insignificant relationship between community participation and sustainability of projects. But results showed that community participation in projects is poorly realized as it was supported by the research findings that projects officials failed to recognize community involvement, empowerment and capacity building by including them in strategic planning, decision-making and policy implementation. The relationship implies that the more the community citizens level of participation in such project the higher will be the sustainability of such project as well the less the community citizens level of participation in such project the lower sustainability of such project. Based on the findings, it is concluded that community involvement, empowerment and capacity building was ignored in projects. This was in relation to lack of project sustainability due to poor practice of community participation at all stages of project cycle. The researcher at the end recommended that project beneficiaries or the community people should be included in all phases of development projects from the process of needs assessment for the design and development of a project, through project implementation to project monitoring and evaluation. In this case there is a strong need for awareness on the role of the communities and their indigenous knowledge systems in ensuring projects success. | en_US |
