Abstract
The maJor objective of the study was to examine the causes of school dropouts in
Maragua Division, Murang'a South district, Kenya. The study was conducted in Maragua
Division Murang'a South district Kenya. A total of 60 respondents were chosen; I 0
politicians, I 0 religious leaders, I 0 political leaders, and 30 parents consulted during the
study.
The study findings were collected in line with the research questions of the study. The
first research question sought to find out the causes of school dropout in Maragua
Division. The study findings reveal that; poverty, corpcral punishments, chronic illness,
long distance of schools and lengthy learning hours were the answers given by
respondents.
The second research question sought to find out the effects of school dropouts in
Maragua division. The study findings here revealed that; high crime rates, high level of
illiteracy, early marriages, and early pregnancies were the answers given by respondents
on this research question.
The third research question sought to find out the solutions to school dropouts in
Maranga division. The study findings revealed that; building of more schools, free
education, compulsory education, provision of lunch in schools, and reduction of learning
hours were the solutions given by the respondents.
Conclusions and recommendations were then made after presenting and interpreting the
data.
