dc.description.abstractThis study investigated the relationship between the social security system and poverty reduction with the objectives of knowing the extent of the Social Security system on poverty reduction, determining the level of poverty in Rwanda and to identify whether there is a significant relationship between the social security system and poverty reduction. In this study, the researcher utilized quantitative and qualitative research techniques such as questionnaire, and interview. The researcher collected data from beneficiaries of various types of benefits that are provided by the Social Security Fund of Rwanda in Gasabo District of Kigali city. The target population was 934 pension benefits beneficiaries and using the SLOVEN’s formula the sample size is 280 pension benefits beneficiaries. The study findings showed that there is a significant relationship between social security system contributions and poverty reduction as we have seen that many of the question regarding the independent variable have proved that the social security system plays a significant role in poverty reduction by attributing old age pension benefits, survivors benefits, employment injury benefits and funeral benefits to beneficiaries and which are determinants of poverty reduction in one sense or another, The responses form question targeting especially the kinds of investment made by the Social security fund of Rwanda also proved the relationship between the social security system and poverty reduction as respondents agree that the SSFR investments are very crucial to the fight against poverty. The study further recommended that some articles in the current social security law in Rwanda should be reviewed in order to allow beneficiaries to be engaged into productive activities and that prescription period stated in the said law should be also removed. It also recommended that funeral benefits amount may be adjusted to the current cost of life because the existing one is dated from 1974en_US
