Abstract
This study was on challenges that affect the teaching and learning of science subject. The objectives of the study were; findings regarding the, the major factors that affect the learning and teaching of science subject, methods that can be employed in teaching of science subject and strategies that can be employed to improve in teaching of science subject . The research methodology used were; research design, sampling techniques, data collection methods and instrument, data analysis, ethical consideration among others. The study sampled 132 respondents out of a study population of 200 respondents according to Morgan (1970) formula of determining the sample size of the respondents. The study found out that, the major factors that affect the teaching and learning of science subject were ; Few and knowledge science teachers is a major factor that affect the teaching of science subject ,Lack of materials for practical lessons which affect the teaching of science subject, Poor motivation of science teachers affect the teaching or science subject, Broadness affects the completion of the syllabus, r car or science subject by the pupils affects the teaching and Peer pressure influence that pupils towards learning the science subject. In addition, the methods that can be employed in teaching science included; Field work technique, Group discussion, Question and answer, Brain storming and Lecturing. More still the strategies that can be employed to improve on learning and teaching of science subject included; Motivation of science teachers so that they have morale in teaching, Employing more qualified and knowledgeable science teachers, Improving on financial benefits to teachers, Introducing science laboratories at primary level, Supervision and monitoring of science teachers and Counseling and guidance of pupil to love science subject it was concluded that Few and knowledge science teachers, Lack of materials for practical lessons which affect the teaching or science subject, Poor motivation of science teachers, Broadness affects the completion or the syllabus. Fear of science subject by the pupils affects the teaching and Peer pressure influence that pupils towards learning the science subject were the major [actors that affect the teaching and learning of science subject. Fw1hermore, it was also concluded that Field work technique, Group discussion, Question and answer approach, Brain storming is a method that can be employed in teaching science subject and Lecturing arc methods that can be employed in teaching science subject. Finally, It was also concluded that Motivation of science. Employing more qualified and knowledgeable science teachers, improving on financial benefits to teachers, Introducing science laboratories at primary level, Supervision and monitoring of science teachers and Counseling and guidance of pupil to love science subject. The recommendations were need for introduction of practical lessons by availing laboratories at school to make the pupils transfer the real knowledge acquired from class into practice, need for the counseling and guidance of the pupils by encouraging them love and like the science teachers and also not to follow peer groups, Motivation of teachers by providing for them both intrinsic and extrinsic rewards to make them have love and morale for teaching the pupils hence improved performance and Employment should be based on proper qualification for a particular subject to make them teach what they know.
