Abstract
The purpose of the study was to examine the impact of single parents on academic performance of the learners. The objectives were to investigate the causes of single parents and examine the impact of single parents on learners' academic performance. The researcher adopted a cross sectional survey design and both qualitative and quantitative methods were used. The instruments used to collect the data were questionnaires, interview schedule and observation. A number of characteristics hindering intellectual development among children living with single mothers and fathers were established, discussed and the recommendations made. The study revolved on three research questions. The researcher sampled the primary• schools through random systematic method sampled forty teachers through random picking and from single parents through random picking from every school. The finding indicated that majority of the children living with single parents perform poorly as a result of low economic status and lack of parental care. The researcher recommended that the government should help single parents in educating their children and schools can also support such parents.
