Abstract
This study investigated the women and youth paiiicipation m conflict prevention and
peacebuilding in Puntland. The study was guided by the following objectives: i) To understand
the perceptions of women and youth to peace, security and peace building in Puntland; (ii) to
assess the level of participation of the women and youth in conflict prevent and peacebuilding
processes in Puntland; (iii) and to analyze the factors that hinder_ the women and youth
pa1iicipation in conflict prevention and peace building Processes in Puntland.
The study found that theĀ· perception of women and youth towards conflict prevention and
peacebuilding was positive since they indicated the need to put down aims by the warring
factions since it has brought too much loss of lives and destabilization of peace in general.
Fmihermore, the study established that both groups highly pa1iicipated in peacebuilding
processes through tour, media, songs, football match and poetry as well however their
participation were hindered by factors such as patriarchal institutions, cultural ( customary law),
and religious nonns, level of education, context, aimed conflict and insecurity, and
intralllhousehold bargaining power.
The study concluded that Somali youth and women's contributions to curbing violence and
building peace contradicts the belief that peacebuilding is a eider's affairs only also it is noted
that education level of women is low while significant number of youth has low academic
knowledge, the other noted challenge is context norms (customary) which excluding youth and
women all mechanisms of conflict prevention and peacebuilding. Rather, it demonstrates that
peacebuilding is the collective responsibility of all members of the war-affected community.
Somali youth and women's contTibutions demonstrate their agency in shaping and affecting their
war-affected communities. The study recommended the need to establish a high level awareness
raising and campaigns against exclusion and strongly strengthen youth and women free
movement in Puntland, specifically encouraging that Diaspora women and youth activists do
more in te1ms of trainings, employment, and advocacy and influencing central authorities and
traditional leaders. Same recommendation was advised civil society organization (CSOs) to
educate both groups and pressure local autonomy to support elimination of bad habits based on
exclusion of participation
